News Item Text Function/Purpose (Purpose) News Item Text


 The news item text function is also known as a social function or social function, namely what is the purpose of writing a text for the general public. Well, nothing but news item text aims to provide information to readers about an important event or event of value.


 In addition, with the news item text, people can determine their attitude as a response or response to a news item. For example, with news about police regulations that require motorcyclists to wear shoes, the public will be more orderly for reasons of safety and also avoid sanctions.




 Characteristic of News Item Text


 Each text must have its own characteristics to distinguish it from other types of text. The characteristics of news item text are as follows:


 The content of the text focuses on an important event or event


 The language used is short but concise


 Sometimes it starts with the name of the city or the name of the media that published it. For example Jakarta - ….


 Usually accompanied by pictures / illustrations and a title (headline) that describes the essence of the event.




 Language Features of News Item Text


 What are the language features of a good and correct news item text? Here we go:


1. Using simple past tense

 Simple past tense is a form of sentence to express an event in the past. You see, new news is written when the incident has occurred.


 FYI, sometimes writers and writers rely on the simple present tense in making headlines or titles to give the impression that the information to be conveyed is new and urgent.


 Oh yes, sometimes news item text can also be written in simple present tense to tell a fact that is still ongoing today.




 2. Using saying verbs


 Let's look again at the generic structure of news item text points, guys. There, there are example sentences that end with "Raina said." Well, Raina is a person's name, while said is an example of saying verbs. So, saying verbs are identical verbs that occur in conversational activities.


 Examples of saying verbs are, respond, say, answer, ask, reply, inquire, tell, etc. However, in news item text, generally the saying verbs will be written in the past tense. For example, say becomes said, then tell becomes told, etc. Saying verbs are also known as reporting verbs in the use of reported speech.


 In Indonesian, you will often find saying verbs such as reported, said, said, told, etc.




 3. Using action verbs


 Action verbs or dynamic verbs are verbs that refer to an action that is visible to others. As explained in the article 11 Types of English Verbs (Verbs) and Examples, action verbs are also known as dynamic verbs.


 Let's look at the following example sentences:


 On Tuesday, Didi was taken to Bandung for treatment. Muthia said no diseases were detected but he died on Friday.


 On Tuesday, Didi was taken to Bandung for treatment. Muthia said no disease had been detected but she died on Friday.


 In the sentence above, there is taken which means "to be brought" and treatment which means treatment.




 4. Using adverbs: time, place, manner


 Do you remember what adverbs mean? Adverbs are adverbs that describe verbs, adjectives, or other words. In this case, the adverbs used are time, place, and manner.


 Adverbs of time are adverbs of time, place is an adverb of place, and adverbs of manner are adverbs to express how an activity can be done or how an event can occur.
